[Bristol=AP/Newsis] A Black Lives Matter protest that occurred on 2020 June in Bristol, where the protestors are throwing former slave-trader Edward Colston’s statue into a port. It was revealed on the 21st (local british time) that there are less female or non-white men statues than animal statues.

[Seoul=Newsis] Report Choi Yeong-Seo = It has been found out that in London, a city that has been criticised for being sexist and racist, there are more animal statues than statues for women or non-white men.

According to CNN on the 21st (local british time), reports from the British Charity Art has found that while 8% of statues in London are animals, there are only 4% of statues of women, and 1% on non-white men.

This is in contrast with the fact that out of the 1500 statues in London, over 79% of them are on men.

The British Charity Art has announced that out of these statues, most of them are on royalty, politicians, famed writers and artists, and actors.

England’s statues have been globally criticized due to the fact that they have been a source of sexism, as well as racism.

England has colonized lots of countries in the past, and due to the fact that they had interests in setting statues of themselves all around the world, there are still statues of figures such as Edward Colston, or Robert Baden-Powell, reported CNN.

Last June, a black lives matter protest that occurred in Bristol also resulted in the statue of Edward Colston, a merchant that sold over 100,000 black men to the U.S in the 17th century, being thrown into River Avon.

In the same month, a local council in the South of England revealed that they would also throw Robert Baden-Powell’s statue away. Powell is criticized for being homophobic, as well as having racist views.

The Commission for Diversity in the Public Realm has also stated that they would “try to fix these different problems spread throughout London, and help create more statues, and landmarks within the capital.”

The Commission for Diversity in the Public Realm also revealed that in order to ‘better reveal the efforts of all the citizens that helped in the construction of these new landmarks’, they would create an investment fund that is worth around 1 million pounds.
