ISSUE VIII - "GHG Emission" by Logan

Updated: Sep 6, 2022

We, humans, inhale oxygen and exhale carbon dioxide. But if we were the only factor that “releases” carbon dioxide, Earth wouldn’t rise in temperature every year. Every year, factories, transportation, agriculture, and even cigarettes release carbon dioxide which is involved in Greenhouse gases (GHG). GHG are artificially released gases that are causing the Earth’s temperature to increase annually. This is because the GHG molecules are capable of allowing visible light to come through but opaque to UV radiations. Thus, GHG traps the heat from escaping but allows sunlight to come in, which increases the temperature of our planet Earth. For the following reason, Earth has been rising in temperature for about 0.08°C (0.14°F) per decade since 1880. Although this doesn’t seem a lot, in the bigger picture, where humans have a long life to live, this is a huge problem. But is it truly possible to terminate GHG emissions? Or is there a way to at least reduce the emission?

To reduce carbon emissions, the United Nations (UN) recently adopted a Paris agreement in 2015. The Paris agreement was about limiting climate change and helping the countries be able to deal with problems on their own. Like this, we are slowly heading towards reducing global warming and GHG emissions, and the days don’t seem so far until we reach net zero emissions.
